Today is a good day. I've been talking with my colleagues and we all have the same view you can never say that you know everything about chimps and there's nothing else we can learn. Every day is so different, obviously the same routine but there are always new lessons about primate behaviour every day, making each day different and special. We are also seeing our younger chimps growing up and different social networks being created. We have built more new climbing structures for the outside enclosures but the chimps had to wait inside, despite the sun shining outside.... It was well worth the wait for them because they are having so much fun.....I promise to show you a picture of Juanito and Waty chasing each other, having fun jumping on the new structures. When we see this we can't stop watching them, you never can get bored of watching them have fun. Africa is improving every day, after a few nice encounters and greetings with her friend or “adopted mum” Romie, we decided to see if they would be happy sleeping in the same room together, and ….they seem to be comfortable sharing the room. The quiet Romie is showing dominance towards Africa at feeding times; Africa gets upset initially because remember she was so used to be the “princess” having everything she wanted and she liked. We all know life can be very easy if you have a fixed routine without any changes or challenging situations but if there is too much routine, your life can become too stale and boring. We know that Africa and the other chimps/macaques would like to choose the easy option but we want to enrich their lives and give them the opportunity to be challenged and develop their personalities and we give them plenty of challenging situations to help them along. |
