Our old friend Joey from Mole Hall has died

Joey

We are all saddened by the news that Joey from Mole Hall has died. You will remember that just over a year ago we campaigned tirelessly to re-home Joey and Tubman to our sanctuary in Spain but unfortunately the Johnstone family who owned the chimps changed their minds about them being retired with us and decided to send them to Wales.

Joey was a special chimp with a great sense of humour. We will never forget him. Rest in peace dear friend.  I'm afraid that we don't have any details at the moment but we will let you know as soon as we know more.

ITV1’S This Morning programme are planning to show Africa’s rescue

Africa May 2010

We are very happy to announce that ITV1’S This Morning programme are planning to show Africa’s rescue. There will be two films made by ITV featuring Africa’s rescue and our patron TV vet Dr. Scott Miller joining our rescue team. We will let you know the dates nearer the time.

For supporters who have been following Africa’s progress, here is an update from Charlotte Abrahams, a volunteer at our sanctuary in Spain:

Its almost a year since Africa arrived at MONA and the changes to her appearance and temperament are amazing. When she arrived her skin condition prevented hair growth on her head but now thanks to lots of natural sunlight, a good healthy diet and the application of aloe vera cream it has almost disappeared and she now has a good head of chimp hair. She's looking very pretty!

The last few months have been difficult for her having to learn that in the chimp world there are hierarchies and at Mona she can't be the first to get everything. A tough lesson when you've spent nearly 12 years being treated as a child. For her first 6 months with us she had a separate room away from the main chimp bedrooms to keep her calm and undisturbed by the rowdier members! Some days it was difficult to get her to go outside or even into the adjoining room and any attempts were met with displays and spitting. In these last two weeks we've found the opposite! Africa is so happy outside and has no fears of what challenges the day will bring. We really have to encourage her to come in for dinner with an apple or two.

Heavy snow causes crisis at the sanctuary! We need your help….

snowy sanctuary

The North of Spain has been paralyzed by heavy snow and we have been struggling at the sanctuary because we have been without electricity or a telephone line since Monday. We have also had to keep the chimps inside because it is just too cold for them and they are not happy at all. Of most concern to us was that we had no heating for the chimps since Monday and we were desperately trying to locate a generator. The chimp’s caretakers are providing them with lots of hot drinks and warm blankets and they are working hard to keep the chimps busy with lots of enrichment.  We don’t know when we will have electricity again but we located a generator yesterday but it is costing us 60 euros per day to rent it and 300 euros for the transport.

We are asking out supporters if they can help us with these unexpected costs by donating via justgiving http://www.justgiving.com/mona-uk/Donate.  We really appreciate your help.

Our apologies if you have been trying to call us to visit but the telephone lines are down and we don’t know when they will be fixed. Also as you can imagine the sanctuary is closed until we can get everything up and running again and the roads are cleared. We will let you know when everything is back to normal.

Many thanks for your patience.
