volunteer holiday

Are you 18 years old and over and available to volunteer with us for six months to a year?

Why not apply for a volunteer primate carer position at our sanctuary in Spain?

We depend heavily on volunteers to continue our work and care for our primates. Volunteers are responsible for

many of the tasks involved in the day-to-day care of the primates at our sanctuary. The minimum a period of stay

is six months.

A typical day in the life of a primate carer at the sanctuary:

-          Prepare breakfast for primates

-          Distribute food in main enclosure to encourage foraging

-          Help to clean the indoor sleeping quarters

-          Collect sawdust from the nearby wood yard and apples from local farm

-          Help design and make new enrichment devices to stimulate the primates and encourage them to play

or forage for food

-          Prepare evening meal for primates (rice, vegetable juice etc)

Working hours

Volunteers work five days per week, which is organised on a rota system. The hours are usually from 8.30am

till 1.30pm and from 3.30pm till 7.30pm. These hours can be longer in the summer.

Experience needed

Previous experience working with primates or other type of animals is desirable but not essential.  What is

important to us is that volunteers can work well in a team and that they are committed to the aims of the Mona

Foundation and that they are available to work full-time for a period of six months.

Olga

A huge thank you to everyone who came to our 10 year anniversary fundraising event at the Cambridge University Zoology museum and made it a huge success! We raised nearly £5000 to help our primates in Spain. Our patron Dr. Scott Miller was the perfect host and he also gave a wonderful talk. Our founder Olga Feliu and Professor William McGrew gave fantastic talks and Lynsey de Paul was the perfect auctioneer. We also really appreciate Dr. Jane Goodall DBE’s continued support.

We would also like to thank our sponsor Aspire Recruitment Solutions Ltd, the caterers Inder’s kitchen and Simply Cava and Espelt Viticultors for supplying the drinks. Simply Cava have also said that for every bottle of Cava they sell on-line from Mona supporters in July they will donate a £1 to Mona. Thank you Simply Cava. We also like to thank Benji from My String Theory for doing an excellent job.

We also had many volunteers who helped us on the evening from making cakes to doing the coat checks to helping at the bar. What a team, thank you! We all had a great time and we made many new friends. We are very proud of what we achieved and it was even better to share this with our friends. On behalf of the primates, thank you!!!

Forever in Our Hearts Romie
Written by Dr. Lorraine Docherty

RominaIt’s been an extremely difficult week for us at MONA. We end it with the sad news that our dear Romie has passed away.

Last week she was not her usual self so we decided to do a complete health check. We saw that she had a mass in her uterus, her kidneys also seemed affected and the blood tests show her immune system was severly weakened.

On Friday she underwent emergency surgery to remove the uterine mass. Unfortunately, during the operation we discovered with great shock that most of her organs were seriously affected by tumours. Romie had been living her normal life until last weekend when she didn’t want to join her group outside in the big enclosures. Her health had rapidly declined since then and we now know why. Her body was not able to cope with the surgery and sadly she passed away.

As some of you might know, Romie lived at the sanctuary for nearly ten years. She was the matriarch of the group and Toto's companion. She has been through so much in her life having been used as a baby machine for a animal trainer who used chimps in the entertainment industry. After many years of legal wrangling we managed to reunite her with two of her babies Nico and Sara and she has lived with them ever since.

We will always remember her as our sweet Romie, and hope that over time the family will learn to live without her, as so will we. Once more we thank you for your support which has enabled her to live at MONA in what were surely the best years of her life.
