by Olga Feliu As we mentioned in previous newsletter Tom needed an adjustment period before starting his integration. Within days of arriving, Tom was already working with carers and he began to move in and out of his bedroom exploring every corner of his new home without any problems. He has adapted very quickly to his new diet and he was very motivated and open to any type of enrichment presented him to. We begin by introducing him to Toni. They approached and quickly showed very positive behaviours. Toni showed his characteristically friendly demenour and in a few seconds he started playing Tom. After Toni, we continued with Charly and Juanito. They did not react as well as with Toni but in the end there was some tolerance. The problem came with Marco and Bongo. At no time was he greeted with open arms. After several sessions of association we could see that Marco and Bongo had no intention of accepting a male stranger in the group so decided to restart the association of Tom in the family group. We have begun several sessions with the family and so far it seems that Tom needs to regain confidence with the new chimpanzees and that is why the process will take longer than expected. Currently, Toni is his soul mate and we even offer the option Toni to keep Tom company at night. Toni now likes to spend days and nights together with him. Tom will need more time to adapt to this new situation and of course we have to respect this. Our task now is to present opportunities for him to make new friends but we will not force it and we be patient and wait for him to decide for himself which direction to take. We will wait to see how it evolves and then prepare for the transfer of his friends Coco and Bea.
